Octavio is in Austin again for the weekend to knock out more leads. Pictures will follow! Hopefully we’ll have the chance to play with some room mics for a few song segments this week also, we’ll keep you posted folks. Take it easy.
Here are those pictures I promised (sans pictures of Pablo due to the fact that we’ve have already found a home for him, HORRAY!)
Tavo has been using the Fender Telecaster Custom that is modified with a Hotrails pickup. It just sounds way more high-gain and less abbrasive than his standard Tele. We’re also getting really nice stuff with different settings on the Shiva that you can see in the pics. Its been super versatile… thanks Conrad!
Eric and I have also been knocking out vocals here and there which continue to come out pretty good. No pics though. They would be of me standing in front of a mic… use your imagination. Imagin-a-tionnnnn. IMAGINA-EEEE-TION!

Pictures of Octavio’s lead sessions are on the way, just wanted to check in and let you know that things are going super great with the final instrumental tracks. We’ve really begun to use the extra time we have to slow down and simply try different ways of recording each take. Lots of tasty noise and fun layering. Also, the new Fight Night and Batman games for PS3 are LEGITTTTT.
We also found a puppy today on the side of highway 71 this morning who was destined to be run over if we didn’t scoop him up. I named him Pablo and he is by far one of the most chill pitbull mixes I’ve ever hung out with. If anybody thinks they can give him a home just let us know! (Pictures also coming soon!)

Vocals for “Half Hearted Love” and “Lying In The Quicksand” are completely done. We are using a Rode NT1a mic through the Neve Portico and are just seriously blown away at the clarity. Turn the gain up with headphones on and you can count your pulse. Seriously.
Ok, not so seriously. But it is a great sounding mic. More to come soon, keep in touch.

Over the weekend I was able to finish all of my rhythm guitar tracks. Octavio and I had a good time mixing all the different amps in various ways for each song. All of the songs have a different tonal character, which is really cool because we’ve always just found one guitar sound and used it for every track. This time there’s a bit of dynamic when it comes to the type of amps you hear throughout the record. We’re stoked! Some notable combos: the Vox AC-30 mixed with the Fender DeVille on “I Never See You Anymore” and the Bogner Shiva also mixed with the Vox AC-30 on “Miles of Country”.

- Guitar Sessions
Next up we have guitar leads and vocals… I’ll get pictures up as soon as we take enough to make another collage thingy.
Hello all, sorry about the delay! Seth knocked out all of the bass tracks two weeks ago before I left for sunny California, and then we took off a few days to play some shows in San Antonio and in Houston when I got back. We borrowed the almighty Ampeg SVT classic tube head from our long time friend Nerd Rock Josh. We’ve rented a Neve dual channel Portico pre so it made it super easy to mic his cab and run a D.I. track at the same time. The tracks sound BEEEEEFY.

Bass Sessions
We went over to Infinity Recording Studios (super awesome room) here in Austin, TX to track drums with Barret Walton and Rory Phillips. Eric got his ass kicked, but the results are amazing. We should have the edited drums back soon and then we start bass and guitars… stay posted.

3 days at Infinity Recording Studio
Welcome to the new Westbound Departure studio blog! As of 6/4/09 we have official begun the task of tracking the “Miles of Country” EP. Check back for a detailed look into what it’s like to track a record from start to finish. We’ll be recording a lot of the record ourselves in our new home studio, but we’ll definitely be using the help of many friends and their facilities along the way. This blog is the ONLY way to stay connected throughout the entire process so stick around for pictures, videos, and your first chance to hear previews from the “Miles of Country” EP.
